What are the Different Kinds of Burns?
There are three different types of burns and they are mainly categorized based on their severity. For example, first-degree burns are minor burns that only affect the uppermost layer of the skin, the epidermis. This can be caused by coming into brief contact with a hot surface such as a hot countertop or dish. Second-degree burns affect not only the epidermis but also the dermis – the second layer of the skin. Swelling and blisters may develop and, in some cases, scarring also occurs. Finally, third-degree burns occur when the fat underneath the skin is burned. Nerve destruction and numbness are common symptoms.
